![]() ![]() It’s important for the audience to feel the love that these two characters have for each other, as well as their sadness, anger, joy, and grief. The acting in Meet Me at Dawn is, in a show set as simply as this one is, the key to telling this story the right way. It’s almost as if when that single light comes on, it’s a call to the audience to pay attention to something extremely important with regards to the plot. ![]() As the day progresses, the lighting changes, and at times, mainly when Robyn is having a revelation or is pondering a particular feeling, the lights go down except for a solitary light on Jennifer Faulkner, adding a sense of gravitas to the moment. Amber Lynn Parker’s lighting is something that did come through on the livestream, though, and it is something that is done extremely well. It only happens once or twice during the show, but it added a bit of complexity to something that I believe is best told simply. I viewed the show through the livestream, where they added a few effects to bring some of the projections onto the screen on which I watched, though I would have been happy if I just simply watched the onstage production without the overlays. The use of projections (Kwame Brown) onto curtains show the water that is figuratively lapping on the beach as well as some other scenes in flashback or fantasy scenes. The show is simply set, Robin Macartney’s design comprising of a few large rocks and a number of smaller stones on the stage in what is largely a black box production. Meet Me at Dawn handles each of these in a way that leaves the audience questioning their own feelings and emotions. ![]() Is this island real? Was the accident real? If not, where exactly are they? These questions, and the events that gradually start to answer them, lead the pair to contemplate love, loss, and grief, and what each of those mean in their relationship. Helen, on the other hand, is consistent in her reactions and for the most part her emotions. As the day goes on, it becomes clearer what is happening, at least from Robyn’s perspective. She’s immediately physically ill, but then what follows are hallucinations, feelings of deja vu, and other inclinations that this island may not be what it seems. Played by Jennifer Faulkner, Robyn feels like something isn’t quite right about this place. Robyn, on the other hand, is having a more metaphysical reaction. Helen, played by Jordi Montes, has a visceral reaction to the accident, an overload of adrenaline causing her to get right to the business of figuring out how to go about finding a way off the island. Having rented a boat for the day, girlfriends Helen and Robyn find themselves the victim of an accident and ostensibly stranded on a deserted beach, with no idea where, exactly, they are and no clue around how to get back home. Having premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2017, Radial had originally planned on putting English writer Zinnie Harris’ play up in 2020, prior to the Covid shutdown that impacted so many theaters, and by the time the group was able to add it to this year’s slate, a small Philadelphia theatre had presented the North American premiere, so this run, on stage through April 8 represents its West Coast premiere. The play has taken a long and roundabout path on its way to Seattle. What would you do if you had one last day with a loved one? What would any of us do? That is the question facing two women who find themselves stranded on a deserted beach after a boating accident in the play Meet Me at Dawn, presented by the Radial Theatre Project, directed by David Gassner and starring Jennifer Faulkner and Jordi Montes.
